Regional offices: Underground injection control files.

These records are created by the water management divisions in the EPA regional offices. Part C of the Safe Drinking Water Act sets the requirements for the Underground Injection Control Program (UICP) which in turn governs the creation and use of injection wells. An injection well is defined as a well into which fluids are injected and such wells are divided into five classifications including some for hazardous waste. To operatean injection well one must be issued a permit, and once a permit is granted, the wells are inspected periodically. The granting of permits is split between Federal and State authorities. Currently EPA has this responsibility in 22 States and territories. In the remainder, the States have the responibility and EPA has oversight authority. Injection well permits are for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely. Each permit may cover one or many wells.
